Electric car charging stations: how much do they cost and is it worth having at home?
-
One of the most critical aspects of owning an electric vehicle (EV) is the charging station. You can now charge your EV not only at home but also in various locations across the city. Many major cities and smaller towns in Lithuania offer several EV charging points. In Vilnius alone, there are over 150 public charging stations available.
Many of these public charging stations are free to use. In some, however, you may need an RFID card for user identification. Using an RFID card allows free charging for a limited time, typically up to 2 hours. At other stations, you might need to pay for parking or consumed electricity. For example, at "Renerga" charging stations, users pay per kilowatt-hour (kWh). At €0.25 per kWh, fully charging a 30 kWh EV battery would cost €7.50. Keep in mind that charging stations may vary in cable type and charging speed, which can influence the cost. Learn more about different types of charging stations here.
On our website, you can find various types of charging stations for home use. We offer both Type 1 and Type 2 connectors with different power capacities. You can also choose between single-phase or three-phase stations, depending on your home’s electrical system. If you want to charge two electric vehicles simultaneously, we provide the HOMEBOX DUO charging station.
You can find all our charging station prices here. Single-phase stations with different connectors start at €350. A three-phase station with a Type 2 connector is priced at €400, and the HOMEBOX DUO charging station is available for €450.
We also offer additional equipment for charging stations, such as a Wi-Fi module, which allows you to manage and monitor the station via your phone or computer, and an accounting module to display total electricity consumption (kWh) on a screen. These modules can be added for an extra €50. Investing €400-€500 in a home charging station ensures you can conveniently charge your EV whenever you need.
But is it worth having a home charging station when you can charge your EV for free in the city? While public charging stations often provide free or low-cost options, it's worth considering that frequent charging might lead to additional expenses. You may struggle to find available slots at free stations, and the yearly costs of using public paid stations could exceed the investment in a home charging station. With a home charging station, you can charge your EV whenever it’s convenient for you. However, in certain situations, public charging stations remain a valuable resource.
